Brotherhood is a good thing

To go Greek, or not to go Greek

Our youngest just finished his freshman year at TCU (go Frogs!) and he had a phenomenal first year experience.  He had an awesome dorm family, meeting so many new people, knocking it out of the park in his classes and getting involved in a lot of social activities. He did not pledge a fraternity in the fall and I’m really glad now that he made that choice. He was able to focus on his classes and assimilate into college life without the pressure of a very active social group.

Spring semester he was very fortunate to pledge the Lambda Epsilon chapter of Sigma Nu. A brand new charter on the TCU campus, he is now one of the founding fathers! All of the parents were invited to participate in chartering weekend in April where we learned all about the mission of the chapter.

“To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor and Truth.
To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart and character.
To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity.”

After being conflicted over whether or not he should go Greek, I realize now that it was a “no-brainer.” He attended Jesuit College Prep for high school and enjoyed such an amazing brotherhood of friends there that being in a fraternity is a natural transition. He needs to have a network of guys who “have his back” as he navigates his way to adulthood.

This subject is on my mind because a) my Timehop (iPhone app that shows you all pictures you took or anything you posted on social media from years past) has popped up with orientation from his freshman year and b) it is that time of year when new kids have chosen their colleges and are deciding which activities to participate in their first year.

And coincidentally, this week’s menu features a lovely chopped Greek Salad! So my plug is to encourage your college freshman to go Greek (if it’s right for them) and go Greek (salad) this week! :)
