60 Years and Counting

Sixty years ago on July 7, Robert (Bob) & Jeanette Butterfield were married and began the dynasty which produced 7 children, 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren (thusfar). They’ve owned homes from Michigan and Illinois to Texas and finally, New Mexico. It’s been quite the journey and 50 of us gathered over the July 4th weekend to help them celebrate this momentous occasion of their anniversary.

It was such a good time to catch up on everyone’s lives—we will have another wedding to attend next year—thankfully not one of my children this time. A couple of the grandchildren are nearing their college graduations, one brother is building a home, new jobs and ventures, surgeries recovered from…we covered a lot of news! Not to mention how fun it is to see all of the cousins bond as they move into adulthood. But the highlight of the weekend was the party on Saturday evening with margaritas, sopapillas and mariachis.

Over the years, Bob’s speeches have delighted the entire family and extended relatives. He shares jokes and memories and almost always sings a song. His contribution in tribute to Jeanette on this evening was very touching.

Gentle woman, quiet light,
morning star, so strong and bright,
gentle Mother, peaceful dove,
teach us wisdom; teach us love.

He wasn’t quite able to make it through the verses, due to emotion, but how sweet was this insight into their marriage? The love and respect that he feels for his lifemate was so evident and a glimpse of how blessed he feels after their 60 years together.

Another remarkable thought I want to share about Bob & Jeanette-you’ve heard the old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Well, I’d like to boast that my in-laws, at the ages of 80 and 82 ate SUSHI (for the first time ever) with us in Seattle when we traveled there in May. They were adventurous and fearless and I hope my children will say the same of me when I reach their age.
