A quiet holiday - Easter 2020

That I am aware, I have never not attended a church service on Easter Sunday in my entire life. My daddy was a missionary and then a pastor, so I grew up in a church. My husband was also raised in a strong faith community and cannot recall a time when his family missed Easter mass.

This year, we began our day in front of the TV and watched Easter mass live with the SMU Catholic community. We dressed up, not in new clothes as we would have in other years, but I put on a dress and heeled sandals, applied lipstick and combed my hair. My son and his girlfriend sat on the loveseat and JB and I occupied the sofa. It was a really nice service and we felt a shared community with other christians around the globe that could not attend their own church services but still worshipped from home.

Our daughter, son-in-law and their daughter arrived from Ft. Worth and we talked about how the year before, we had three little ones (Clara was so tiny) on Easter Sunday. We sat down for a brunch of quiche, egg casserole, cinnamon rolls and fruit salad; a small spread but delicious all the same. We toasted with grapefruit and orange juice mimosas and had a group Zoom call with our daughter and her children in Colorado. (Their Easter was a little different than ours…they were snowed in on Sunday so they had an egg hunt on the Saturday before!)

After brunch we had a little Easter egg hunt with Clara in the front yard. Just one little tot and two dogs sniffing around…the day was beautiful and starting to get warm. After she’d found all of the treasures—for her the fun was in picking up the eggs and putting them in her basket, not sure she discovered there were goodies inside—we changed our clothes and all of us took a leisurely stroll up the road to the Cooper Center.

The ducks and geese provided some entertainment on this quiet afternoon. There are already a few goslings beginning to waddle around. We threw a football, snapped some pictures and walked back to the house.

The rest of the day was spent napping, playing cards, FaceTiming friends and watching a replay of the 2019 Masters golf tournament. We noshed on a salumi and cheese board, enjoyed an early dinner of grilled lamb chops, a divine potato gratin, asparagus and fresh baked bread. Then ended the evening with carrot cake and coffee. Clara and her parents packed up and headed back to the Fort.

It was the most subdued Easter I have ever experienced but not without joy. I am grateful that we are all healthy and surviving the economic downturn. I love each of my family members even when we cannot physically hold them and tell them so. I appreciate this great country we live in and know there is no better place to be. But most of all, I am completely humbled by the knowledge that Christ gave his life on the cross that we might never die. ❤️

Happy Easter!
