Red wine + Chocolate

Could there be a better match made in heaven? I mean seriously. Forget about coffee with dessert—I adore dark chocolate with a glass of red wine or port. So why not combine the two? Have you tried Red Wine Hot Chocolate?!

I made a batch for Boxing Day and it was a straight-up treat. So rich and creamy and can I say it? Sexy. This is the perfect beverage to serve your sweetheart after dinner this week. And according to our Dallas forecast, Tuesday (Valentine’s Day) has 100% chance of rain so this lovely, warm drink will make your toes all cozy too.

Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Serves 4

2.5 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 cups whole milk

Pinch of salt

3/4 cup fruity red wine, such as Merlot, Shiraz, or Zinfandel

Whisk the chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, and cinnamon together in a medium saucepan. Add the milk and bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until hot and smooth, about 5 minutes. Stir in the salt.

Remove from the heat and add the wine. Divide among 4 small glasses or mugs, (or 2 large!) garnish with a cinnamon stick and a dusting of cocoa powder, if desired, and serve. (recipe adapted from

Speaking of romantic meals, my husband and I don’t really go out to dinner for Valentine’s Day. The crowds are crazy, service is often sub-par and the food is predictable. We like to cook dinner together on nights when all the other couples are struggling to get out on the streets . One year we made lobster risotto and some seared sea scallops with champagne-butter sauce. Another time it was Barolo braised short ribs with pimento cheese polenta. This year I’m feeling Italian—because I think it’s romantic. I want to open a nice bottle of chianti and share a big plate of spaghetti & meatballs a la Lady & the Tramp! Farewell to Artizone + SuperBowl Fun, CNY, Valentine's Day!

So much going on – where to begin?
Butterfield Gourmet is undergoing some changes, and I have to admit we’ve been surprised by some of them. Most of you know that Cafe Gourmet to Go, the shop that was hosting our business in Preston Commons, closed their doors permanently effective December 31. Since then we have been searching for a new home and I feel like we are getting close to finding a permanent or at least, semi-permanent location for us to work and you to pick up your meals.

This past week I received a call on Monday afternoon notifying Butterfield Gourmet that Artizone had shut down their online grocery delivery service – effective immediately! I have to admit that I was shocked. I was to be the Artisan of the month for February and I would celebrate my 4th anniversary on the site in May. Butterfield Gourmet had a really nice run on Artizone, and I was thrilled to have another avenue to reach customers. But we will move on and I am exploring new opportunities for product sales and delivery.

Today is SuperBowl Sunday! I like football (I’m rooting for Peyton); I enjoy the commercials (spoiler alert: there’s a tear-jerker for Moms!); But I really love the food (munchies, duh, my scene). We are having just a few people over but here’s what I’m contributing to our menu today:

Homemade Israeli Hummus with Naan wedges
Avocado Fries
Buffalo Chicken Potato Skins
Chips & Homemade Salsa and Queso
Southwestern Cornbread Salad
Sliced Cold Tenderloin with rolls and Horseradish Mayo
Football Brownies

And after that over-indulgent meal, Chinese New Year’s celebrations begin tomorrow! There are just a couple of menu items this week that I am including for that purpose – a Spinach & Edamame Salad (green for wealth) and Asian BBQ Chicken Wings with Fried Rice (red for luck). It’s the year of the Monkey!

Valentine’s Day follows this weekend so let me know if you need any sweet treats for your sweetheart or your child’s class or teacher. Valentine's Day - staying home and having the best meal of the year!

I won’t say that we’ve never gone out for dinner on Valentine’s Day…there was that time that our server at a (now closed) French restaurant insulted my husband and me by telling us that we “just didn’t understand fine dining.” And another year when the establishment lost our reservation and made us wait for an hour and a half. So unless you are at the beginning of a relationship, I am probably not the person to recommend braving the restaurant crowds to eat out this coming Saturday night!
However, I do recommend cooking a meal in that night with your loved one.  This has become a fun tradition for us, whether we cook with another couple or by ourselves. Get a babysitter and send the children to the other side of the house to pretend they are on a camp out. Then you can craft a romantic dinner together and eat by candlelight in the dining room!  Here’s what we are making this Valentine’s Day, and trust me – we will make it TOGETHER:
